Health & Work: the effects of loss of work according to a scientific study

This research confirms, if any were needed, the close link between social and psychological well-being.

The job loss has a strong impact on the emotional state of the person and his condition affects not only economic but also health and relational life.

it has become even more important to take care of their "professional project": if we are aware of our goals and our resources we can prepare properly and promptly to changes, giving us new options in advance and professional opportunities and employment.

who loses their job not only puts at risk their own economic condition but also their health. To say this is a study by U.S. researchers at the University at Albany in New York.

lose their jobs due to redundancies, the closure of the company, or even just a spontaneous drop of the working environment imposes a greater risk of incidence of various diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases or disorders psychiatric. The conclusion is the result of an analysis performed on a sample of 8125 U.S. employees conducted by Kate Strully and his colleagues in the Department of Sociology at the University at Albany and published in the journal Demography .

Compared to employees who remain firmly in their place of work, those who lose jobs due to the closure of their companies are more likely to see 83% of his health condition deteriorated. The probability increases instead of 43% in case of dismissal imposed by the employer.

Numerous studies conducted in the past have shown that having a job is an essential condition for maintaining the physical and psychological wellbeing. Losing your job involves fact, in addition to financial loss, deprivation of social status that usually helps maintaining good mental health.

In an article published recently in the journal British Medical Journal , Danny Dorling of the University of Sheffield, England, points out that this condition is particularly evident in young people, who tend to suffer the loss of a job more important than adults report more symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorders in nature. And it is about young people who, according to the author, should concentrate the efforts of modern society in a period of severe economic crisis like the present.
